Emmie was placed in an advanced education program in which the children learned about a real world issue - in this case, the disappearance of mussels in a given location. They researched possible explanations for this. Emmie was extremely bored with the project by Week 2 (and complained to me upon pick up EVERY week thereafter). Her lack of interest made for a less than stellar effort put forth throughout (in my opinion), which bothered me since it is the effort, rather than result, that counts. On the way to school on the morning of the presentation, Emmie was in a panic because she didn't know her lines for the presentation.
Mom: Why don't you know your lines?
Emmie: Isabel wrote the presentation and our note cards. I did the PowerPoint presentation because that was actually a little bit fun.
Of course, Emmie's group won the award for Best Use of Technology in the presentation. She turned around and looked at me with the widest s#!+ grin you can imagine. Mom sincerely doubts whether Emmie learned the connection between effort and reward.
