School Retool(ed)
We didn't have formal work from the district, but Mom imposed daily requirements. The referenced show refers to an educational rendition. Emmie usually chose an Aerial America. We also watched America in Color (1920's-1960's) and various movies based on true stories. Quotes while watching: Show (referencing a disappeared population): No one knows where they went. Emmie: That's not true at all. THEY know where they went. Show (referenced a fault line) Emmie: Why don't they fix it? Mom (explains that the depth is to the Earth's core) Emmie: Me, goes there with hot glue gun (pretending to hold hot glue gun)....I can fix this! |

We picked up Emmie's materials from school. Mom chuckled at the additional details included in her schoolwork. |

Emmie had a periodic virtual class check-in. |
Mr. Brems played the following song at the beginning of each school day that Emmie enjoyed to the point that she requested it during their virtual class check in. He also had motivational quotes posted around the classroom (the kids hit a poster on their way into the classroom). Needless to say, Mom loved Mr. Brems as Emmie's teacher.

Emmie's Excerpts
Seabiscuit
The movie Seabiscuit starts in 1910 well before the great depression. There is a nice family with a wonderful amount of children the oldest being a great jockey and loved to ride horses. When the great depression began the family lost their home and had to stay in a Shanty where you could easily catch a disease. The family couldn’t provide for their children any more and thus, sent their oldest son to stay with a family who still had a home and could provide for him. The family that took him in called him “Red” for his red hair and spirit. Later in life, Red was trying new things to provide for himself. He tried boxing but after a few fights developed blurry vision. In Seabiscuit’s first race, he was beat, but then he won his next six races and set record times. Red wanted Seabiscuit to race the greatest horse of the century, War Admiral. Red and his coaches set up a race that would draw the best horses near for the grand prize of $100,000, which is about 1 million dollars today, yet War Admiral’s owner said no thanks which brought people to think War Admiral’s owner was scared to race Seabiscuit. The big race went on anyway and Seabiscuit was beat by a nose. Red, his coaches and Seabiscuit then entered every race the Admiral was supposed to be in, but every time War Admiral scratched (quit the race before it started). Finally, War Admiral’s owner agreed to race Seabiscuit and Red. A week before the race, someone asked Red to breeze his horse (to ride his horse around the track). Red agreed happily, but what Red didn’t know was this horse was very sensitive to loud noises and sounds. A tractor was nearby and when it backfired, the roaring engine scared the horse and fell to the ground. Red couldn’t unlatch his foot from the strap so he was dragged behind the horse and was badly injured and could not ride anymore. His coaches said they should scratch, but Red said no and to call Wolf to ride Seabiscuit. Wolf was Red’s old jockey friend; his full name was George Wolf. Red told George what to do and how he was trained and on the day of the race Red tuned in on the radio and Seabiscuit won by a lot! Wolf continued to ride Seabiscuit until the horse ruptured a tendon in his leg. Once Seabiscuit recovered, Wolf worked Seabiscuit out to test his readiness. When Red saw this, he felt left out that Wolf got to ride Seabiscuit when he wanted to pursue his passion of horse racing so badly. Red went to the doctor to discuss if he would ever be able to ride again. Red’s coach had a fatherly connection with him and didn’t want to risk him dying or getting badly hurt because Red was still recovering and one fall could kill him. His mentor and Wolf had a talk about if Red should ride and Wolf said and I quote “I would rather break a man’s leg than his heart.” They decided to let Red race in the upcoming race; the $100,000 race and the same one he had lost by a nose previously. Red and Seabiscuit couldn’t keep up with the big pack of horses. Wolf, on a different horse, slowed down so Seabiscuit had some competition and Seabiscuit went zooming ahead after looking into his competition’s eyes and placed first. I learned that Seabiscuit was an inspiring horse.
Emmieism's
Upon Emmie waking, and Mom trying to get a jump start on the day:
Mom: What do you want for dinner?
Emmie (already sarcastic): I didn't know it was dinner time. Did I really sleep that long?
Emmie started to tell us a joke, but then paused:
Emmie: You and 3 friends are hanging on a helicopter....wait, that doesn't make sense.
Mom: Why not?
Emmie: You don't have any friends. Burned!
Family Breakfast:
Eric: Pancakes are ready right now.
Emmie: I'm coming.
Eric: So is Christmas....at about the same rate.
Mom (laughing): That was good.
Emmie: At least I'm not as old as Christmas.
Eric: Are you talking about me?
Emmie: Yes
Mom (still laughing): That was good too.
While watching a documentary, it was said about the people of a land, "No one knows where they went." Emmie immediately retorted, "That's not true. They know."

Emmie's Excerpts
Cool Runnings Report
The movie, Cool Runnings, takes place in Jamaica. In Jamaica, there is no snow so it was hard to start a bobsled team. A group of athletes did it anyway. It was hard to get a coach who knew a lot about bobsledding because there was only one man who really knew what he was talking about and didn’t want to coach anymore. Eventually, the team persuaded him to coach them and they called him Coach Blitzer. Coach Blitzer was originally in the Olympics but after two gold medals started cheating because back then he felt he needed to win. All the other teams at the Olympic tryouts were not confident that a team from a hot country with no snow would ever even pass to compete in the Olympics. The moral of the story Cool Runnings is that even if people laugh in your face or push you down you can do anything if you really try and give it your all!
The Diary of Anne Frank
The movie, The Diary of Anne Frank, takes place in Amsterdam, Netherlands during the time period 1942-1944. The Germans, under Hitler’s rule, were hunting down all the Jews. The story begins when Anne’s father tells the family that they need to go into hiding. A very nice couple let them move into an attic above the husbands work. They must be quiet from 8:30-12:30 and 1:30-5:30. After a little time staying up in the attic, a family of three joined them. At first it was hard for Anne to have to deal with another family and their cat. After a while, they started driving each other crazy. The families lasted 2 years up in the attic before they were discovered in 1944. The only one who survived through the diseases and the camps was Otto Frank, yet he passed away in 1980. This concludes what I have learned from the movie “The Diary of Anne Frank”.
Catch Me If You Can
This true story is based on a con man named Frank Abagnale JR but his code name was Frank Taylor. Frank began his life as a con man in 1963 and he lasted until 1969 in the con business. He is said to be the youngest and best con man his at his age. He was a very elusive check fraud criminal and was known as a lawyer, a doctor, a pilot and etc. Frank was captured and sentenced to 12 years in prison and at almost his 5th year in prison the FBI released him under the conditions that he work with the FBI on check fraud for the rest of his sentence with no pay. Frank felt unloved in many ways his father died a little after his capture and he didn’t feel loved by his mother and didn’t want to go home. Frank is still alive now and in 2018 he even had his own podcast. These were some of the things I’ve learned from the story about Frank Abagnale JR/ “Catch Me If You Can.”

Coronavirus Quarantined
Emmie's first request was that we rearrange her room. Mom is conditioned to doing this task to the point that she didn't even blink when asked. With a torn calf muscle, she went to work deconstructing the loft bed. In the picture below, Emmie awaits a llama lamp and fairy lights.
Emmie has taken to writing list after list, calendars, etc.
A homeschool day at Adirondack Elementary consists of reading, a documentary, art, a dog walk, stair running, math and LA worksheets.
We ran out of fresh fruit, but have plenty of frozen so Emmie learned how to make sorbet. She was showing this creation to Katie over FaceTime when Katie noticed that it was smiling at her.
"Eric makes the best homemade pizza EVER!"
Firewood collection lead to fireside chats (and reading):
